Due to the fact that the overwhelming majority of scientific institutions of various departmental subordination have practically no conditions for keeping the monkeys and working with them it is advisable for the next 10-20 years to focus the research at the Research Institute of Medical Primatology in Adler, creating on its basis The National Interdisciplinary Research Center (NIRC).

Tasks of the Center:
One of the main tasks of the center is to determine breeding of laboratory primates in accordance with the needs and requests of scientific institutions of the Russian Federation, regardless of departmental subordination, and foreign countries, job security, providing with monkeys and methodological and technical assistance to staff in conducting research on the basis of NIRC in Adler.
An extremely important area is the creation of a high-quality colony of macaques free of pathogens (B-virus (Herpesvirus simiae or Cercopithecine herpes virus type 1), SRV, SIV, STLV-1, and SV-40-free). Of interest are also primates free of the pathogens of the Mamu-A * 01 genotype. Of particular interest is the creation of a stock of M. nemestrina free of pathogens (Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB); simian immunodeficiency virus; simian retrovirus, all subtypes; simian T-lymphoptrophic virus, and Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1). This model is rare and extremely important for experiments on the development of a vaccine against AIDS, the study of recombinant vaccines and immunological preparations, etc. At the moment, there is a lack of such primates for biomedical research, and in the near future the demand and price for these animals will be extremely high.
If a unique troop of genetically characterized and MHC typed primates can be created it will definitely attract scientists from around the world to the Institute. Such activity takes the work of the Primatology Department to a more modern level and requires modern immunological and molecular-biological laboratory research. When creating such a colony, and attracting scientists to carry out the experiments on them, it is very important to have biological laboratories of ABSL-3 and ABSL-4-safety level.
Researchers at the National Interdisciplinary Research Center will conduct investigations in the field of biology and pathology of monkeys, biomedical research in the areas of public health where monkeys are the only experimental model. These are AIDS, and other infectious diseases; fetal development and pharmacology; neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease); development of new models of human diseases in primates (Parkinson’s disease); nutritional deficiencies; lung disease (asthma), emphysema, and other chronic lung diseases; xenotransplantation; cell and gene therapy; acute and chronic stress; cognitive function; behavioral research and social interactions; neurobiology, neuropharmacology; experimental surgery (transplantation, orthotics), as well as space biology and medicine. It is supposed to conduct investigations in the frame of short-term and long-term research programs in the field of reproductive biology, population genetics, psychopharmacology, etc., for academic and commercial projects.
Up to 50-70% of the work of the institute should be focused on conducting contractual work with research institutions and commercial firms to test drugs and vaccines in the interests of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
The task of the NIRC is also to create rules and guidelines for working with primates, identifying promising areas of research on primates, analyzing modern materials on primatology, contacts with foreign primatological institutions, issuing quarterly information with an emphasis on the most promising studies.
The laboratory of veterinary genetics created at the NIRC and equipped with the necessary equipment (PCR machines, sequencing machines) may also be of interest to regional livestock farms for the detection of genetic diseases and animal breeding. Moreover, for the analysis a drop of blood on paper sent by mail is needed. The work can be organized according to a principle of full self-sufficiency.
NIRC has to be part of a scientific, educational and health care system of the Krasnodar Territory, and accordingly must fit into the programs conducted in the Territory. It is necessary to restore interactions with regional scientific and educational complexes (state universities and specialized research institutes).
To create the NIRC, we are already making efforts to modernize the existing research center - as part of the Federal Targeted Investment Program, the construction of phase 2 of the monkey nursery, and now the creation of physiology laboratory has been completed. At the same time, it is necessary to change drastically the situation regarding the personnel and resource provision of a scientific organization, the effectiveness and the applied value of scientific research, and the involvement of the world scientific and educational community.

At the same time, it is necessary to change drastically the situation regarding the staffing and resource provision of a scientific organization, the effectiveness and the applied value of scientific research, the involvement of the world scientific and educational society, and bringing it to the requirements of GLP standards.
To accomplish the tasks set on the basis of the research institutes, it is planned to implement the design and construction of a complex of new scientific laboratories, including the Center for Collective Use Laboratories, as well as the development, expansion and modernization in accordance with the existing GLP standards.
The National Interdisciplinary Research Center will include:
A Primate Center
- A reconstructed nursery - (4500 monkeys)
- Nursery phase III - (4000 monkeys)
- Vet clinic
- Scientific unit (complex of insulators, laboratories)
Research part:
- Research Center with a complex of laboratories, clinics, operating rooms and auditoriums of 3-4 floors - 9000 m2, including:
- Center for collective use laboratories
- Laboratory of Cell Technologies, Organ Conservation and Transplantation
- Laboratory of Infectious Pathology
- Complex of molecular biology laboratories
- Laboratory of Veterinary Genetics
- Laboratory of Physiology (Phase II - commissioned in 2015)
- Complex of laboratories for testing new drugs (Separate project Center for Pre-Clinical Research)
- Reconstructed existing complex of clinics and existing laboratories
Diagnostic center with a department of bioequivalence studies and early phases of clinical trials - 4 fl. -3000 m2.
Clinic for Experimental Surgery
Exposition and demonstration complex - 12.37 hectares
Residential complex for employees 5 buildings, 5 floors. – 10.000 m2, with a fitness center and swimming pool
Hotel complex with a conference hall - 5 fl. 6000 m2
Administrative complex - 3000 m2
Economic complex - 3000 m2
Subsidiary farm - 1.7 hectares
A complex reconstruction of engineering infrastructure facilities (networks, new sewage treatment plants, a boiler house, an autonomous source of power supply, a substation, etc.) and comprehensive landscaping (84 hectares) are needed.
The result of the modernization of the institute will be the creation of a scientific center for preclinical and clinical translational research meeting the requirements of International guidelines, the priority tasks of which will be to develop innovative methods for studying cognitive function of the brain, the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, the metabolic syndrome, the creation of new medical products and devices, artificial organs (hybrid technologies), tissue engineering, gene and cell therapy.
